Local FOOD Plus

Kerr Farms appreciates the recognition, support and commitment of Local Food Plus (www.localfoodplus.ca).  LFP, as it is also known, is a non-profit organization that brings farmers and consumers to the table to share in the benefits of environmentally and socially responsible food production. They are committed to building and fostering local sustainable food systems by certifying farmers and processors and linking them with local purchasers. They are a national organization, however, the current focus of their work is in Ontario, and in particular the Greenbelt around the Greater Toronto area.

What is Local Sustainable Food?

Sustainable agriculture raises food that is healthy for consumers and animals, environmentally friendly, humane for animals, provides a fair wage and safe working conditions to workers and not only supports the rural communities but also enhances them.

Why Sustainable Food is Important

Today agriculture is facing many environmental challenges including the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, urban sprawl, loss of biodiversity and wildlife habitat, along with economic issues such as farmers’ constant struggle for stable and predictable markets, worker health and safety, rural revitalization and community food security.
The founder of LFP, Lori Stahlbrand (www.agrinewsinteractive.com) explains the importance of local sustainable food systems saying “Just 40 years ago, we were largely food self-sufficient. In 40 years, this has completely reversed. We import most of the food we eat, both conventional and organic. In fact, when it comes to imports, organic is in even worse shape than conventional.”  Lori Stahlbrand goes on to say that “This is what has happened to our food system. It makes absolutely no sense to transport food over great distances, burning fossil fuel, contributing to climate change at the same time as our own rural communities are becoming more impoverished.”
Kerr Farms along with Local Food Plus and the support of other LFP members recognize that it is time to act and that widespread change and reform must occur now in order to keep Ontario a viable farming area.  Kerr Farms is proud to be a part of Local Food Plus and is committed to providing local sustainable food to Ontarians.
