October 2, 2007 - Fiesta Farms Partners with Local Food Plus

Toronto ’s largest independent retailer, Fiesta Farms has formed a partnership with Local Food Plus to supply locally produced food. “LFP certified food from Ontario ’s Greenbelt and across the province is now available to Toronto consumers, thanks to a partnership with food retailer Fiesta Farms,” Mike Schreiner, Vice President of Local Food Plus, told a news conference on October 2, 2007 . “The Fiesta Farms staff have gone out of their way to connect with local farmers and to ensure that local sustainable food is available for their customers. We need more supermarkets to follow Fiesta Farms’ lead by putting local sustainable food on their shelves.”  Kerr Farms LFP certified Ontario Angus Beef is available in the fresh meat counter at Fiesta Farms, located at 200 Christie Street. www.localfoodplus.ca

September 26, 2007 – University of Toronto / Local Food Plus 1 Year Anniversary
We had a very successful year supplying the University of Toronto with Kerr Farms Local Food Plus certified canned Roma tomatoes.  To celebrate the initiative to have LFP products used on campus the U of T held a lunch where Kerr Farms’ Traditionally Raised Angus Beef Meatballs in Organic Tomato Sauce were served.  The event allowed students to enjoy a locally produced meal while chatting with local producers and members from Local Food Plus.

September 16, 2007 – Picnic at the Brickworks
Kerr Farms was very pleased to attend the first ever Picnic at the Brickworks organized by Slow Food Toronto (www.toronto.slowfood.ca) and Evergreen (www. evergreen.ca/en/). The event brought together local producers, award winning chefs, artisan winemakers and brewers with consumers.  Kerr Farms partnered with Veritas (www.dine.to/veritas) restaurant and Chezvous Dining (www.chezvousdining.ca).  Chef Deron Engbers from Veritas featured Kerr Farms Ontario Angus Beef Striploin, while Chef Ezra Title from Chezvous Dining featured our Shortribs.  Both Chefs did a phenomenal job and we were honored that they chose to showcase Kerr Farms at this wonderful event.

March 30, 2007 - The Kerr Farms Team Wins TWO Premier’s Awards
Kerr Farms Sales (Chatham) Ltd
Kerr Farms Sales received the Premier's Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence for our efforts to market beef that meets consumer’s demands for healthy, local food.  Bob Kerr received the award from the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Leona Dombrowsky on March 30, 2007 in Glencoe, Ontario.

Robert Kerr found a way to bring more stability to the market for high quality beef – by differentiating his products.  No hormones, no antibiotics, no feed with animal by-products. Beef producers, who are willing to meet those criteria become part of the vertically integrated supply chain created by Kerr Farm Sales. In return, producers receive a guaranteed base price. Retailers in the supply chain are able to buy at quoted prices. Kerr Farm Sales is now working to develop value-added processed products from trim, which accounts for a large amount of the usable meat of each carcass.

Pine River Ranch Ltd.
Pine River Ranch received the Premier’s Award for their Environmental Stewardship efforts.  Amos Brielmann received the award from MPP Bill Mauro on April 27, 2007 in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

At Pine River Ranch, environmental stewardship and green energy are getting results. Careful, intensive pasture management means high-quality grazing for the operation's 600 beef cows.  Today, there is a riparian zone along the ranch's waterways; manure is composted and runoff eliminated; land has been set aside under the Green Cover program, fences have been reconstructed and trees planted in a bid to evaluate the potential for a shelter belt.  The Brielmanns even use solar energy to power remote water systems for their cattle.
